Security for Deliveries/Large Orders

Security for Deliveries or Large Orders

Protect your sales and prevent fraudulent customer/driver activity with our suggested tips below.

Why Implement Security Measures?

Not only is it a mandatory legal requirement for delivery drivers to get a customer signature for all alcohol deliveries, should a driver leave your delivery by the front door or porch, chances are high that your goods might get stolen. Your customer might then file a complaint that they did not receive their order and request for a refund, leaving you dazed and confused (and out of pocket and your product).

While we cannot control the circumstances that happen as your goods make their way to your customer, we can suggest a few security measures to keep your business protected from devious drivers or fraudulent customer activity. This is why it’s important to implement a few security protocols to keep your business safe or counter such security risks should they occur.

Recommended Security Measures for All Deliveries

When it comes to processing delivery orders and working with 3rd party delivery drivers, we recommend implementing the following security protocols with your delivery driver:

  • When the driver makes it to the store, double check their ID to make sure they are who they say they are.
    • If possible, we recommend taking a picture of the driver’s ID - we know this might be a difficult ask, but try it and see if they are open to your suggestion. If not, proceed with the next suggested step.
  • If possible, we recommend taking a picture of the driver (face fully visible in the shot) with your delivery order in hand.
    • This would allow us or the 3rd party delivery platform to identify the driver should anything tragic befall your delivery order enroute to the customer.
  • Kindly remind any and all 3rd party delivery drivers that a signature is required for all alcohol deliveries and is mandated by state law.
  • Call any 3rd party delivery provider for more information should you immediately suspect a delivery order to have gone wrong due to theft or other issues.

The above tips also work when you happen to have a particularly large order (any order above the sum of $100). However, if you happen to have large pickup orders where the customer shows up to pick up their order, we suggest protecting yourself via the following:

  • When your customer makes it to the store for in-store or curbside pickup, we recommend taking a picture of their ID - we know this might be a difficult ask, but try it and see if they are open to your suggestion. If not, proceed with the next suggested step.
  • Take a picture of your customer (face fully visible in the shot) with the pickup order in hand.
  • Get a copy of the customer’s signature whenever possible.
    • This helps us confirm that the customer did in fact pick up their order so they won’t be able to file a non-receipt complaint later.

Remember, the more photos or signature evidence you can collect per large-sum orders, the better.

Tips to Protect Your Business from Fraudulent Activity

  • If you can afford it, we recommend installing a few security cameras on the premises!
    • This would be useful evidence later should a driver refuse to have their photo taken, and then decides to make away with your goods for themselves.
  • Implement a proper photo check-in system for driver and customer pickups.
    • This is entirely up to you but you can definitely use a tablet or a phone dedicated to taking pictures of all delivery drivers and customers who come in to pick up any order.
  • Have signage reminding delivery drivers that it is a legal requirement for them to get a customer’s signature for all alcohol deliveries.
    • It is possible that not all drivers are educated on this legal requirement - they are, in fact, breaking the law if they just drop off any alcohol package by the porch or leave it unattended by the front door.
